Let's Roll Game Day

Last weekend I got to play in a Virtual Wargaming event. The convention went from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. There were 12 events with over 40 seats. I put on a Muskets and Tomahawks game using the V2 rules. The game went well thanks to 2 great players and the Card Playing ap my friend Pierre-Yves wrote for the ruleset.

On Sunday, I got to play in my first computer assisted tabletop game using the "Hun at the Gate" rules for WWI. It was a lot of fun. You can find the schedule of events here and some brief Action Reports here with some photographs. I understand the organisers plan to hold another event in the New Year. Many thanks to the organiser Arofan G for putting together a great online convention.

Here is the Scenario for the Muskets and Tomahawks game with a few photos.

This was the 3rd time the scenario was played, I got in 2 games with Pierre-Yves to go over the rules and test the card playing ap. I all 3 games the British won, although I believe their force was slightly smaller points wise. I think the Canadiens could win, but I believe the Indians have to be played much more aggressively.

Stagecoach!

Another game in our campaign this past week, this time we diced up an Escort Scenario. The Attacker (the Sheriff) in this scenario essentially has too move a Stagecoach across the terrain while at the same time preventing the Defenders (the Banditos).

I believe we now have the core rules down, although we did mess up the Fisticuffs once or twice in our game. When we read through the scenario, quite a few questions came up. I get a sense we are the only play-testers going through the actual campaign so there is a lot of uncharted ground. We decided to press on and just deal with things as they came up. Our posses were as below, my two shootists were now gunslingers and 3 fingered Juilo was now a legend. Grey Beaver had been killed in the last game so we saw a new Greenhorn in the Sheriff's posse.

Banditos
Tuco-Legend-Red
Julio-Legend-Black
Pablo-Gunslinger-Purple
Rubén-Greenhorn-Light Grey
Jean-Pierre-Gunslinger-Light Brown
Ramone-Greenhorn-Dark Brown

Sheriff's Posse
Clyde Barlow-Legend-Blue
Jacob Cannon-Legend-Orange
Jasper Callahan-Shootist-Yellow
Toothless Howard-Greenhorn-Grey
Three Toed Elten-Shootist-Pink
Jadon Three-Fingers-Greenhorn

It was last week when we played and I forget details pretty quickly. What I do remember is that it took 4 hours to play but we did conclude the game with P-Y's Sheriff's Posse getting the stagecoach off the table thus winning the game. It was quite close though, I think we only had 2 men each left on the table. I was able to kill the Sherriff, so "Big Gun" Barlow is out of the picture. I was also able to kill Jadon Three Fingers. Unfortunately, One Eyed Pablo got killed.

The campaign part of this game needs some work for sure as does this specific scenario. I do like the basic rules. In our next game, we are fielding only 4 characters each, with a limit of 2 Legends and a requirement of at least 1 Greenhorn in the posse. We already have these characters in play but if we were going to start again, I believe there should be a limit of 1 Legend and 1 Gunslinger in the posses with a maximum of 4 characters, but starting with just 3. I believe the progression should be more focused on equipment rather than Bonanza tokens, which are much too easy to earn. The Desperado Card progression works well.

Anyway the usual photos!

Equity in the Stagecoach driver ranks!

Got "Big Gun" right between the eyes!

And off the table he goes!

Muskets & Tomahawks Test Game

Yesterday myself and Pierre-Yves had a trial run with the 2nd edition of the Studio Tomahawk rules, Muskets and Tomahawks. This is the first time I have had a chance to play them since they came out aside from a couple of solo games earlier this year. I am putting on a game later this month so I needed to trial the rules as well as the scenario. Generally it went quite well, some screw ups with the rules and the scenario will need some adjustment. We also try an online Card Playing ap that P-Y has written and it worked well, a couple of modifications needed but all in all this went very well.

Here are a few photos, we brought the game to conclusion in 2 hours, it is quite bloody! You will see that I have placed little coloured magnetic markers on the movement trays, with red being the Brits and blue being the French-Canadiens. I will not go into the game or the order of battle but it was roughly 350 points per side on a 3x4' terrain mat.

Definitely need another practice session before I am ready to game-master a game but hopefully it will sort itself out.
